Discovery.Mentorship.Collaboration.Impact

The Fremah Lab is a research program led by Dr. Sarah Adjei-Fremah in the Department of Biological Sciences at Winston-Salem State University.

Our work investigates molecular and cellular responses to environmental factors, with current interests spanning PFAS exposure, mitochondrial biology, gene expression, immune signaling, cell culture and emerging approaches relevant to regenerative medicine.

Our mission is to advance understanding of how environmental and biological factors influence cellular and molecular function while providing students with meaningful opportunities to participate in scientific discovery.

We seek to combine rigorous experimental research, interdisciplinary collaboration, undergraduate mentorship and community engagement to contribute to both scientific knowledge and the development of a diverse future STEM workforce.

Biography

Dr. Sarah Adjei-Fremah is an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Winston-Salem State University and a faculty member affiliated with the university's Biomedical Research Infrastructure Center.

Her research record encompasses molecular genetics, environmental contaminants, gene expression, innate immunity, cell culture and biological responses to environmental and molecular stimuli. Her current NSF-supported work investigates how PFAS exposure modifies mitochondrial structure and function.

Her research experience includes appointments as a postdoctoral research associate, adjunct professor, research scientist and research consultant at North Carolina A&T State University.
